Target Start Date: August 2026 Application Deadline: October 15, 2025 (applications accepted until filled or closed) Position Description The Department of Justice Studies at San José State University invites applications for an assistant professor of forensic science beginning in August 2026. This position will support the Crime Scene Investigation Concentration (FS-CSI) within the Forensic Science program. Teaching may include laboratory courses such as Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Science Applications, with potential development of additional FS-CSI coursework based on the candidate's expertise. The Department of Justice Studies is multidisciplinary, offering four undergraduate concentrations in Forensic Science (FS-Biology, FS-Chemistry, FS-Digital Evidence, FS-CSI) and undergraduate/graduate programs in Justice Studies, Criminology, Legal Studies, and Human Rights. The Forensic Science curriculum benefits from interdisciplinary collaboration, including courses such as Expert Witness Testimony and Forensic Science in Human Rights Investigations. Current faculty expertise includes digital forensics, forensic entomology, taphonomy, biological criminalistics, and genotyping technologies. Required Qualifications Doctorate in a forensic science field or allied discipline by the time of appointment Demonstrated research and teaching experience commensurate with career stage Aware of and sensitive to the educational goals of a socio-economically diverse student population Preferred Qualifications Significant operational/applied experience in forensic science (laboratory or field) Scholarly activity with publications and potential for funded research Collaborative research agenda with Justice Studies faculty Experience supervising undergraduate research/internships in lab or field settings Experience teaching analytical chemistry, instrumental chemistry, or toxicology Ability to teach Bayesian or inferential statistics at the graduate level Key Responsibilities Teach Forensic Science courses to meet departmental needs and area of expertise Contribute to curriculum development, program planning, and assessment Contribute to teaching, research, and service within the department, university, and communities Foster relationships with community partners (law enforcement, non-profits, private sector) Provide career advising and mentoring to students Participate in shared governance and service assignments Organize all classes within the Canvas LMS Demonstrate awareness of diverse student needs through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies Other Duties All SJSU employees are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
