DEPARTMENT: Exhibitions REPORTS TO: Director of Exhibition Development JOB CLASSIFICATION: Exempt SALARY RANGE : $65,000–$70,000 per year DATE : April 2025

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Exhibition Developer creates new content for exhibitions in the physical Museum galleries and on digital platforms that chronicle the 9/11 attacks, the events that preceded them, and their aftermath. This work is performed through research, content development, interpretive planning, and writing. The Exhibition Developer will support efforts to broaden the reach of the Museum’s core and special exhibitions and related content, connect it with other programming, and contribute to the strategic vision for the department. The Exhibition Developer will participate in developing project schedules, researching and writing scripts, managing content coordination as well as the review and approval processes, and liaising with colleagues within the Exhibitions department and among other departments within the institution. The Exhibition Developer is part of the Exhibitions department, which imagines and actualizes physical installations, audiovisual exhibits, digital interactives, audio guide experiences, and online storytelling platforms. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum has approximately 110,000 square feet of interpreted space, and it is the responsibility of the Exhibitions department to manage these installations, ensure their daily integrity and performance, and plan for future use and relevance for Museum visitors. The Exhibition Developer also assists ongoing exhibition efforts such as licensing and tracking, fact checking, exhibition inspections, content development for publications and documentary films, and other projects. This is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Exhibition Development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Researches, develops content, formulates interpretive approaches, and writes draft label copy and scripts for artifact rotations, special exhibitions, in-gallery media installations and online digital exhibitions, standalone media such as documentary films, and other projects. Develops content deliverables for staff, designers, and media producers. Documents sources and maintains reference files, which may include reviewing audiovisual programs and associated transcripts, diagrams, created graphics, and exhibition text for factual accuracy. Tracks graphic production and assists in reviewing and editing graphic production proofs. Assists with meeting agendas, scheduling, and review processes. Coordinates sharing of exhibition development updates and gathering feedback from other institutional departments such as Collections, Education, Communications, Institutional Advancement, Legal, etc. Participates in other exhibition development, interpretive planning, curatorial research, administrative, and project management responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONAL EVENTS

Participate in the Annual 5K Fundraiser and September 11th Commemoration. Assist with other special projects and events in support of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum mission, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIREMENT

Preferred previous museum experience and an overall understanding of exhibition development from concept development through installation. Two to five years of relevant experience preferred. Excellent communication, research, writing, presentation, and organizational skills. Methodical and attentive to detail. Familiarity with range of computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite. Ability to work on exhibition projects involving sensitive content. General knowledge of 9/11-related history helpful. The Exhibition Designer is part of the Exhibitions department. The team is comprised of 11 individuals with different functions and tenures within the organization.
