Position title: Associate Director for Collections and Operations

Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table for the salary scale for this position: A reasonable full-time salary estimate for this position is $128,700 - $265,000.

Position Description

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law Library seeks an Associate Director for Collections and Operations to play a key leadership role in ensuring seamless and efficient access to Law Library services and resources that support the academic and research needs of students, faculty, and the wider campus scholarly community. Reporting to the Associate Dean of the Law Library, the Associate Director for Collections and Operations is a member of the Law Library's senior management team, contributing to strategic planning and decisionmaking.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the administration of the Collections Department, overseeing acquisitions, cataloging, licensing, and preservation.
  • Supervise and recruit all department librarians, library staff, and assistants; serve as a resource for staff and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Manage the librarys operational and collections budget, negotiating with vendors and publishers to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Coordinate space planning and the strategic use of library spaces to meet the needs of users.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and electronic service providers, ensuring compliance with University of California requirements.
  • Advise on metadata creation and emerging technologies, evaluating new library technologies for integration into existing workflows.
  • Produce reports and messaging to communicate the librarys contributions, budgetary needs, and key metrics.
  • Coordinate crossdepartmental initiatives with Access Services, Reference, and Scholarly Communications to enhance resource accessibility.
  • Provide legal research instruction as needed and support the development of collectionrelated content on library websites.
  • Oversee working conditions, including occasional evening or weekend hours and potential remote work days.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Advanced degree (JD, MA, PhD, or equivalent international degree).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start):

  • Minimum five years of experience in a law or academic research library.
  • Minimum three years of experience with library collections and collection development.
  • Minimum three years of supervisory experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Degree in library science from an ALAaccredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience with law library collections, statistics, metrics, and assessment techniques.
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and project management abilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of legal bibliography and research techniques.
  • Experience in administrative operations and collective bargaining environments.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
